Dangerous Pass
Editorial Board

US President George Bush's latest endorsement of Pakistani government is outrageous at best. This endorsement by US government of a rogue nation like Pakistan exposes the double-standards set by US in fighting the global war on terror. President Bush is setting a dangerous precedent by endorsing the tactics of Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf. Pervez Musharraf has gone back on all the international commitments to end Pakistani sponsorship of terror in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Within a day of Musharraf’s visit to the White House, Pakistan-sponsored Hizb-ul-Mujahideen launched a dastardly attack on Indian security forces in Kashmir and killed 11 soldiers including an Army Major. Instead of taking the Pakistani dictator to task, President Bush has given him a free pass and that is dangerous for the security of Americans and people all over the world.

Pakistan’s role in nuclear proliferation, continued sponsorship of terrorist activities emanating from its soil, half-hearted fight against the global terrorism, withdrawal of troops in Pakistan-Afghan border areas and testing of nuclear-capable missiles further strengthen the belief that Pakistan is a rogue nation that is the clearest threat to international security, and has set a precedent for other problem countries such as North Korea and Iran.

Current US policy in favor of Pakistan is ludicrous and is:
- contributing to the continued terrorist killings in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir;
- endangering the national security of the largest democracy in the world;
- perpetuating the rogue nation status of Pakistan, and in the process setting a dangerous precedent for other rogue countries of the 21st century; and
- allowing the Al Qaida considerable scope to regroup and plan future international terrorist attacks.
